Carol Applegate, Attorney & Registered Nurse
Carol Applegate is a registered family and elder law mediator, an experienced elder law attorney and a registered nurse. The combination of Carol’s nursing and legal experience has given her insights into the challenges faced by her clients and their families and allows for a more holistic approach when dealing with families in crisis and planning for the future.
After 20 years in the healthcare field, Carol returned to law school and received her Juris Doctorate from the Thomas Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan. She also holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Indiana University, a Master’s Degree in Nursing Education from the University of Indianapolis and a Master’s Degree in Education from Indiana University.
Carol established Applegate Elder Law in 2009 and then combined with Lisa Dillman’s firm to form Applegate & Dillman Elder Law in 2019. The combination of Carol’s nursing and legal experience has given her insights into the family challenges faced by her clients. Her background assists her in providing a more holistic approach when dealing with families in crisis and planning for the future, especially when planning for end of life. Her practice areas include estate planning, healthcare benefits, long-term care preparation, public benefits, guardianships, probate and post-death issues, trust administration, and elder abuse and neglect. She is also a VA accredited attorney.
Carol also founded The Voice of Aging, which advocates for the aging population and those who care for them. The Voice of Aging shares information and resources to support caregivers.

Carol was one of the first recipients of the Alumni Legacy Leaders Award as part of the 100th Anniversary Celebration of the Indiana University School of Nursing. The award recognizes the outstanding contributions of 100 of the more than 30,000 living IU School of Nursing alumni. Nominees were selected for making exceptional contributions to nursing through education, clinical practice, leadership, and/or research.
In addition to her legal work and medical industry affiliations, Carol frequently does public speaking and industry education. Carol has been an adjunct professor of nursing law and ethics and business law at IU School of Nursing, Marian University School of Nursing, and Indiana Wesleyan. Carol currently volunteers as an instructor of adult education for OASIS.
In her free time, Carol enjoys china painting. She has a studio in the lower level of her home, and when you visit the firm you can see some of her favorite creations. Carol also collects trains and has created a “train village” in her basement, where her family and grandchildren gather to share their love of trains. Carol’s collection includes her son’s first train set and her grandson’s Polar Express.
